Channellock

In 1886, a blacksmith named George B. DeArment started improving the farriers' tools and spent the cold months hand-forging them in a small two-story factory. It was in Evansburg, PA (Conneaut Lake now). When spring arrived, he would travel from town to town selling his wares from his wagon until it was empty. Then he would sell the wagon and come back to Evansburg by train back to start the process again. 1893 was a difficult year for George B. DeArment. He lost all the company's cash assets but a few local businessmen and his wife helped George to get the needed capital and raise the company again in 1894. DeArment's farriers were becoming popular, and in 1902 the man received the "royal" treatment. England's monarch, Edward VII, ordered a complete set of farrier's tools. In 1904 the company moved into a 12,000-square-foot facility, paying $150 per year in rent. At that period of time the product line included pinchers, nippers, horseshoeing tools and open-end wrenches. In 1911, George's sons became partners in the business. After George B. retired, the two brothers took over the company - J.H. was responsible for sales and administration and Almon directed production and development.

In 1914, hammers were added to the product line. In 1917 George B. died and in 1923 the company moved to its current location on South Main Street with a 33,000-square-foot facility. Since J. Howard passed away in 1927, Almon was left in charge of the company. At that time he changed gave the company the name of Champion-DeArment Tool Company. 1933 was a successful year for the company. The concept of a multi-position, slip-joint, tongue-and-groove style pliers were developed by Chief Engineer Howard Manning. He called the pliers "Channellock." Champion-DeArment started manufacturing this kind of pliers in 1937. The sales in the area reached $300,000. In 1950 Almon W. DeArment passed away and J Howard's sons, William A. and George S. took over the leadership of the company. They reduced the production of hammers in order to diversify the customer base and focused on the pliers. The business was growing at a rate of 10% per year. By 1963, the word Channellock became synonymous to the company's name, so it was changed to Channellock, Inc. to preserve the trademark. At present, the company has an official site Channellock.com where you can buy whatever you are looking for - Channellock Pliers, Nutdrivers, Screwdrivers, Adjustable Wrenches, or Wire Cutters. "Channellock tongue and groove pliers are handy tools. They can do most jobs a regular wrench can do. They are very helpful for household plumbing projects. I don't need a standard pipe wrench anymore. The tongue and groove system is well thought through. It allows each pliers to have a different jaw size; it can be tailored to whatever you are dealing with at the time. This three-pack is worth the money because you can perform certain jobs more easily using different sizes. The fact that it is manufactured in the USA especially makes it good value."

"Channellock pliers are top quality. I am a mechanical engineer who appreciates manufacturing techniques, metallurgy, and attention to detail. I absolutely like these pliers. Almost all of the wear surfaces have been forged, including the teeth and channels. Another good thing about the tool is that it ensures that the grain metal structure prevents corrosion and stress. The steel is very hard, so the pliers can be used for almost any job around the house. The tool is helpful for a number of projects. The fastener that holds two sides together fits well and allows smooth application."

"I have had a pair of Channellock pliers for 40 years already and I still use them from time to time. The new ones are a bit different. They have a peened solid rivet that holds the two halves, while the old ones have a threaded bolt and nut. At the same time, both are solid and have comfortable feel and grip. They have probably cut corners to keep the price more affordable. These pliers are a good purchase and last really long."
